On productions using Granular Access Control, Access Attributes are part of every Binder upload; the values you assign determine who can see each document. This article covers uploading in the Web App, checking a document's attributes, and editing them later. If you're new to Granular Access Control, start with Introduction to Granular Access Control.
Granular Access Control is a premium add-on, enabled per production by the ProductionPro team. The upload flow described below only appears on productions where it has been enabled; if you'd like to use it on your production, please contact us.
Uploading Documents
Documents can be uploaded to the Binder by the Production Owner, Master Admins, Admins, and Contributors. The upload happens in three steps:
Select Files. Drag and drop your files into the upload modal, or click to browse. You can upload several documents at once, and remove any file from the queue before continuing.
Configure Attributes. Each file lists the enabled Attribute Types — assign the appropriate values for every file. Mandatory Attribute Types are marked with an asterisk (*), and you cannot continue until every file has a value for each mandatory type.
Review & Upload. Check your files and click Upload.
A progress toast keeps you informed while your documents upload, and lets you retry any file that fails.
Each document can hold the following values:
Document Type and Document Status: one value each per document.
Departments and Episodes: documents can hold multiple values.
💡 Tip: Think of the attributes as the document's audience: a team member must match every enabled Attribute Type to see the document. Assigning multiple values within a type widens the audience (e.g., Departments: Art, Costume reaches both departments).
Who Can Assign Which Values
The Owner and Master Admins can assign any Attribute Value to any document.
Admins and Contributors can only assign values they hold themselves — other values are visible but can't be selected. Assigning attributes never broadens access beyond what the assigner already has.
Because you assign values you hold, you will see your own uploads in the Binder. Keep in mind that this is a result of the matching rules, not a special right: if the document's attributes or yours change later, your access is re-evaluated like anyone else's.
Viewing a Document's Access Attributes
Every document row in the Binder shows its access information:
The shield button opens the Access Attributes popover, listing each Attribute Type and the values assigned to the document.
If the Episode Attribute Type is enabled, the document's episodes are also displayed directly on the row.
The shield and the episode labels are visible to everyone — so any team member can check why a document is in their Binder.
🚨 Important: A red dot on the shield means the document is missing a value for a mandatory Attribute Type, and the popover shows the type marked as Missing. Such a document is hidden from everyone except the Owner and Master Admins until the missing value is assigned.
Editing a Document's Access Attributes
The Production Owner, Master Admins, and Admins can change a document's attributes after upload:
Click the more (ellipsis) button on the document row and select Edit Access Attributes.
In the panel, select or deselect values for each enabled Attribute Type, then click Save.
Changes take effect immediately: team members gain or lose access to the document as soon as the new attributes apply. As when uploading, Admins can only assign or remove values they hold themselves.
💡 Tip: Contributors can assign attributes when uploading a document, but cannot edit them afterward. If a Contributor's upload needs different attributes, an Admin, Master Admin, or the Owner can make the change.
Uploading from the iPad
On productions using Granular Access Control, Binder uploads are completed in the Web App — the iPad app will direct you there. See Granular Access Control on the iPad for details.
