Access Attributes are the foundation of Granular Access Control: once configured, they determine which Binder documents each team member can see. Setup is done in the Web App by the Production Owner or a Master Admin. If you're new to Granular Access Control, start with Introduction to Granular Access Control.
Granular Access Control is a premium add-on, enabled per production by the ProductionPro team. The settings only appear when it has been enabled; please contact us to add it to your production.
Opening Access Control Settings
In the Web App, open your production and go to Production Settings.
Find the Access Control Settings card and click Manage Access Attributes.
The Access Attributes page lists the four available Attribute Types — Department, Document Type, Document Status, and Episode — each showing Enabled or Disabled. When Granular Access Control is first turned on for your production, all Attribute Types are disabled. Admins can open this page and see each Attribute Type's status, but only the Owner and Master Admins can open an Attribute Type to view or edit its configuration.
💡 Tip: The Episode Attribute Type is listed on every production, including non-episodic ones; just leave it disabled if it doesn't apply to your show.
Enabling an Attribute Type
On the Access Attributes page, click the edit (pen) button next to an Attribute Type.
In the side panel, toggle the attribute to Enabled.
Add the Attribute Values your production needs (see image below), then click Save.
Enabling takes effect immediately. The Attribute Type appears in the member editing panel and the document upload flow, and factors into every access decision from then on.
💡 Tip: Enable only what you need. Each enabled type adds an AND condition: once documents carry values for it, members without a match lose access. Every enabled type is a commitment to keep both sides up to date.
Creating and Managing Attribute Values
Attribute Values are the options within each Attribute Type: your departments, document types, episode numbers. Nothing is predefined; each production creates its own. so they match how your show is organized.
In the Attribute Type side panel, you can:
Add a value - this must be unique within the type; capitalization doesn't count.
Rename a value - updates automatically everywhere it's assigned.
Delete a value.
Changes apply when you click Save.
🚨 Important: Deleting an Attribute Value is permanent and immediate — the value is stripped from every document and team member holding it. If team members relied on that value for access, they lose that access right away.
Making an Attribute Type Mandatory
Check Make attribute mandatory in the side panel to require a value on every document. When an Attribute Type is mandatory:
Every upload must include a value for that type.
Documents missing one (e.g., uploaded before it became mandatory) are hidden from everyone except the Owner and Master Admins, flagged Missing mandatory attribute.
Turning mandatory off broadens access — previously hidden documents become visible to matching members again. You'll confirm this on save
🚨 Important: A mandatory Attribute Type needs at least one value before it can be saved as mandatory.
Disabling an Attribute Type
You can disable an Attribute Type at any time from its side panel. While disabled:
It's hidden from the member editing panel and upload flow.
It's ignored in access decisions, and any mandatory requirement is paused.
Existing assignments are preserved, not deleted, and return intact if re-enabled.
🚨 Important: Disabling an Attribute Type broadens access; documents that were once restricted become visible to anyone matching the remaining enabled types. You'll be asked to confirm this when you save.
